This activity is to teach kids there's a world beyond "I'm fine thank you and you!"
What You Need:
Attached Worksheet
4 100yen shop balls, 2 with question marks drawn on it and the other with exclamation points.
music
I hand out the worksheet with 16 different emotions on it. We explain that most people don't reply with, "I'm fine thank you and you!" Then we check their understanding of the words on the sheet. The JTE asks the ALT, "How are you?" or "How's it going?" The ALT then responds by dramatically displaying the emotion. So for, "I'm angry!" I shout really loud and stomp my feet and make a really angry class. Then we ask the students for the Japanese meaning. We tell them to write the Japanese on the sheet if they don't know the meaning already. Then the students repeat the words after the ALT.
Break the class into two circles. Show them you have two kinds of balls: question ball and answer ball. They will play a kind of hot potato with these balls. When the music stops, the student with the question ball asks "How are you?" or "How's it going?" Answer ball student must answer with anything but "I'm fine!" The ALT will work with one circle and the JTE with the other circle. This ensures most students have a chance to talk.
In total this activity takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the level of your students. It works as a great warm up game as they get excited when trying to avoid holding the ball.
NOTE: Make sure they don't throw the ball, but just pass it to the student next to them.
