These are three scripts I made for the 3-nenseis. There are three
different scenarios:
• At a customs gate. The students are the travelers and the JTE or ALT
can be the guard. • At a restaurant. The students are the customer and
the JTE or the ALT the waiter. • At a store. The students are the
customer and the JTE or the ALT can be the staff.
I think these can be very useful because they're real world situations
and use real world English. If even one of the students is ever an
exchange student, hopefully they won't be nervous about speaking
English as they'll have these practice situations under their belt. I
did the customs one with my students and it was one of the best classes
ever. I was an especially strict customs guard (based on real
situations), double-checking their "passport photos", confirming where
they will stay, etc. It was great. The store script focuses on slang /
real spoken English, so it may be especially good for listening.
Procedure (How to use):
JTE and ALT demonstrate one of the scripts.
Ask students to explain the situation / meaning in Japanese.
Discuss any vocabulary, grammar or questions.
Hand out the script.
Have students modify their script by filling in the blanks.
Have students practice with a partner. Encourage them to memorize their script.
Students and JTE/ALT then roleplay in front of the class. Ideally, students speak from memory.
Modify as necessary.
