Taste Unit - who's the liar?
This is a fun, hands-on lesson for tastes. (very much like Sakanaushi's)
I did this with my 6th graders as a special lesson, but it's quite simple so it can work for any grade probably from 3rd grade up.
Preparation:
-small paper cups (for # of ss + extra)
-mineral water
-tabasco sauce
-lemon extract
-black coffee (without sugar)
-salt
-sugar
-juice (optional)
1) Make sugar water, lemon water, tabasco water, salt water using the above ingredients.
2) Pour them into the cups. *see below for combinations
3) Line them up on a tray in sets of four.
Lesson:
1) Teach the taste vocab: sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, salty & the question "how does it taste?"
2) Explain the activity: a) groups of 4 students will taste a drink that is one of the tastes above and say how it tastes. b) The other groups in the class guess who is lying. c) The other groups write down the name of the student they think is not telling the truth, and keep score.
3) Take a group in the hallway and give each student a cup. (3 of the same kind, and 1 different taste) Tell them what the 2 tastes are. Have them decide who will be the liar.
4) The group goes back in the class (cups should be covered) and drinks their cup in front of the class.
5) The class asks them "how does it taste?" and the group answers "It's ~" one by one.
6) The other groups write down who they think the liar is.
7) The liar raises their hand to show the answer.
8) I prepared juice and let all the students have a juice of their choice for afterwards, which was a nice treat for them.
Example combination*: (for groups of 4)
- 3 sweet, 1 sour
- 3 bitter, 1 sweet
- 3 salty, 1 bitter
- 3 spicy, 1 salty
- 3 sour, 1 spicy
...
