Rafael uses this game in elementary school but I decided to adapt it to JHS because I thought the kids would enjoy a pirate-themed activity that involves treasure. Basically I made a grid and filled it with the Japanese vocabulary words from the New Horizon book, units 5 through 7, but mostly from 7. Break your class into teams and each team has a pirate ship which they move around the board a turn at a time to capture treasure. As they move around the board they must guess the English meaning of each vocabulary word.
Use the game grid I uploaded here and blow it up to poster-size and put it on the board. I used Microsoft.com's clipart page to print out pieces of treasure like gold doubloons, treasure chests, gems, jewelry, statues, etc. I tried to upload it as well but it wouldn’t let me. I laminated all the treasure and the clipart boats for each team and cut them out and applied small magnets to the back so that they are all reusable. Just create a new board for each unit or several units to help the students review for a test. I also wrote secret points on the back of each piece of treasure, that way if one team seems to have a lot of treasure the other teams don’t get discouraged because no one knows how much each piece of treasure is worth. They are worth anywhere between 1 and 6 points, with only one “special” six point piece.
