Remember MASH? Japanese kids love fortune telling, so I figured, why not teach them MASH? for Valentine's. My friends and I did it all the time in middle school... This activity probably works best if you have grown up loving MASH yourself!
Give each kid a MASH? worksheet. Explain what MASH? is, the differences between Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House. Tell them to fill in the rest of the worksheet: 5 choices each for boy/girl, # of kids, honeymoon, place (where you'll live), car, job (any variation of these is OK too, like pets, etc.). I gave the kids a list of jobs with pictures. Then do your own example. My kids tend to copy whatever I do, so if you give 5 examples, make sure you use a mix of everything. Like for boys, put someone realistic and some movie stars. Or you could just put 1 example and they figure out the rest.
Next, have them exchange papers with the person next to them. That person will start drawing a swirly line in the box on the bottom. Their partner tells them when to stop. Count the number of swirls (you could also have them just choose their favorite number). Using that number, run through all the lists, crossing off the option that lands on that number. Keep going until only 1 choice remains in each catergory. That is their fortune!
They don't get much English in except for listening to the explanation... but it's a fun little exercise for VDay!
